Access Node Data Model
Nodes may be heterogeneous in their design. Some nodes consist of complex relational databases that store regional data in their native richness, while others act simply as a clearinghouse, storing data only in BMDE format at the regional scale. Some nodes develop and host analysis and visualization tools, while others may be simply data repositories. A node need not be a single computer or institution. It may be a local network of computers, perhaps even hosted by more than one institution. They all share in common the commitment to fulfill the goals described above.
The nodes, and the AKN in general, can be pictured as extensions of data sources. Data sources are distinct from nodes. A data source may also be more than one entity, but typically does not fulfill the goals of a node - especially the collection and management of regional datasets. A data source is as much part of the AKN as a node is – it’s the primary building block. Sharing data adds value to the dataset, the entity providing the data and the AKN equally. Data used to better understand bird populations justifies and highlights data collection, the role of the data source and the understanding and significance of each datum beyond its original context.
