Abstract

Mountain Birdwatch is a long-term, citizen-science monitoring project for high-elevation songbirds in the Northeast. The focal species, Bicknell's Thrush, is identified as the top conservation priority among neotropical migratory species in the Northeast. Volunteers conduct ten-minute dawn point counts along trails and follow-up with playbacks for Bicknell's Thrush if none were heard during the point counts. The program was initiated in 2000 and about 120 routes are surveyed annually.

Purpose

Data are collected to maintain a history of Bicknell's Thrush distribution and to monitor population trends and abundance of high-elevation birds. Data are used by land managers for conservation decisions. Data may be useful to document impacts to high-elevation birds from climate change, pollution, and development.

Supplemental Information

The data are freely available to all interested in accordance with PRBO's data-sharing policy. For more information on point counts (e.g., background information, methodologies, data forms, and field protocols) see http://data.prbo.org/cadc2/index.php?page=songbird-point-counts.
