<descript>
One of the most urgent needs for the conservation of habitats critical to migratory waterbirds in Latin America and the Caribbean is the collection of sound information about the numbers and species of birds using particular wetlands. Ducks Unlimited (DU), in collaboration with more than 300 colleagues from thirteen different countries in the Caribbean, Central America, and northern South America, gathered data on distribution and numbers of waterbirds between 1999-2007, with an initial emphasis on waterfowl (Family: Anatidae). DU provided training, worked towards common standards and methodologies, and aimed at expanding the number of wetlands and countries included in the surveys. The information gained from these surveys has helped identify some very important wetlands for waterbirds and has led to increased conservation efforts and awareness for both wetlands and waterbirds within the region.
<purpose>
DU's Waterbird Surveys Initiative was motivated by an interest in learning more about where waterbirds occur n Latin America and the Caribbean, and where wetland landscape conservation programs should be directed. These included designation of new Ramsar sites, establishment of protected areas, and management needs.
The importance of regional efforts to gather data in a synchronized and standardized way, and the importance of sharing all information, was highlighted throughout the initiative.
</purpose>
<supplinf>
The official dates for surveys chosen for the regional surveys were:
- 2nd w-e in October (southern migration)
- 4th w-e in January (wintering sites)
- 4th w-e in March and/or 4th w-e in April (northern migration)
The data will be updated following two additional survey periods with funding from Ducks Unlimited - October 2007 and January 2008, covering Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.. We are not yet certain if there will be future additions to the data directly by colleagues in Caribbean, Central American, and northern South American countries.

Observers had pre-existing knowledge of bird identification or they used published field guides.
DU sponsored multiple training seminars and workshops to provide volunteer participants with the skills necessary to collect data. The workshops included information on species identification. DU also produced field guides of the waterfowl species that occur in the Caribbean, Central America, and northern South America to aid in species identification.
All synonyms/forms used by the different sources have been included in the database and as keywords.

The data were collected by volunteer participants from each country and many received training from workshops sponsored by DU within each country.
DU sponsored multiple training seminars and workshops to provide volunteer participants with the skills necessary to collect data. The workshops included information on species identification, survey methods, and methods to practice how to estimate the numbers of observed individuals. DU also produced field guides of the waterfowl species that occur in the Caribbean, Central America, and northern South America to aid in species identification.

Efforts were made to standardize and synchronize the survey methodology, but the results were varied among years and sites.
Data collection until April 2006 was primarily focused on species of Anatidae. Other waterbird species observed may have been included as notes or observations, but they were not part of the official data. However, there are some data from a limited number of sites in Colombia that also include other waterbird species.
The data collected from October 2006 to the present include all waterbird species for the following countries: Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Colombia.

<horizpar>The coordinate data for each wetland were derived from the following sources: country maps, hand-held GPS units, and GoogleEarth. Coordinate data obtained by GPS were collected during the initial survey effort at each site. Data obtained by a map or from GoogleEarth were derived sometime after the initial survey effort. In most cases, the coordinates reflect a point near the center of the wetland or wetland survey unit.</horizpar>

The official dates for surveys chosen for the regional surveys were:
- 2nd w-e in October (southern migration)
- 4th w-e in January (wintering sites)
- 4th w-e in March and/or 4th w-e in April (northern migration)
Surveys were completed between September and May to collect data mainly on North American migratory waterfowl, with efforts concentrated in October (southern migration), January (wintering populations) and March/April (northern migration). Efforts were made to standardize and synchronize the survey methodology, but the results were varied among years and sites.
Surveys included: aerial surveys, boat surveys, and land surveys. Initial survey efforts were exploratory in nature since there was very little information about the different wetlands and bird populations. Surveys continued to be exploratory for some countries and/or wetlands, but transects and point counts were used for other wetlands that were visited frequently. The data were collected by volunteer participants from each country and many received training from workshops sponsored by DU within each country.

No warranty, expressed or implied, is made regarding the accuracy or utility of these data.
Differences in field methods among countries and colleagues, lack of rigorous synchronization of survey dates, changes in survey personnel, variability in personnel experience and survey effort, and changes in survey locations within countries, were all limitations of the LAC Waterfowl Surveys initiative. As a result, caution must be exercised in attempting to estimate and draw inferences about population trends using data from these surveys. Any such attempts should be made in close consultation with the country experts who have knowledge of specific limitations of these data for individual countries and species.
