<descript>
Double sampling is used to obtain population estimates of arctic-nesting birds in Alaska and Canada. Rapid surveys are made on a large number of plots randomly distributed throughout arctic Alaska and Canada. Intensive surveys are made on a subsample of the plots to obtain detection rates, which are used to calibrate results from rapidly surveyed plots.
<purpose>The primary goals are to estimate and monitor population size, help establish causes of trends, and improve our knowledge of distribution and habitat relationships.</purpose>
