US Geological Survey and Canadian Wildlife Service Unknown Arctic Survey Double sampling is used to obtain population estimates of arctic-nesting birds in Alaska and Canada. Rapid surveys are made on a large number of plots randomly distributed throughout arctic Alaska and Canada. Intensive surveys are made on a subsample of the plots to obtain detection rates, which are used to calibrate results from rapidly surveyed plots. The primary goals are to estimate and monitor population size, help establish causes of trends, and improve our knowledge of distribution and habitat relationships. 1998 2006 ground condition Complete The study area is the arctic portion of North America, as delineated on the Circumpolar Arctic Vegetation Map.
