Abstract

Double sampling is used to obtain population estimates of arctic-nesting birds in Alaska and Canada.  Rapid surveys are made on a large number of plots randomly distributed throughout arctic Alaska and Canada.  Intensive surveys are made on a subsample of the plots to obtain detection rates, which are used to calibrate results from rapidly surveyed plots.

Purpose

The primary goals are to estimate and monitor population size, help establish causes of trends, and improve our knowledge of distribution and habitat relationships.
