How to Contribute?
Contributing data to the AKN automatically makes you an AKN partner. Your dataset, no matter how big or how small, is of value to us and to the biodiversity community. The AKN is interested in any and all datasets concerning bird distribution, with the goal of organizing both observational data and data gathered using constant effort capture methods (i.e., bird banding stations).
How to contribute
The first step in the process is to contact any of the Project Leaders (see addresses at bottom of page) to discuss your dataset. Since every dataset is different, we handle these datasets on a case-by-case basis and we will assist you in the process of mapping and federating your data to the BMDE.
A second, very important step, is for you to fill out the BMDR Questionnaire and return it to us. This will allow us to generate a complete metadata document (BMDR) for your project, which will be FGDC compliant and will be shared with NBII. Further, this metadata essential for any researchers who might utilize your data, since it will describe the essential characteristics of your study. IMPORTANT NOTE: It is at this stage where you will specify the access controls for your data.
An optional final step is to set up a DiGIR Portal Provider on a computer connected to the Internet. This will simplify updates to your dataset if and when they are necessary. If you are not able to set up DiGIR, the process can continue manually. If you are able, we recommend following the implementation standards established by GBIF.
Grid technologies and your data
The AKN is federating datasets through distributed Grid technologies. These technologies include:
1) Data storage structures that create a persistent archive.
2) Metadata variables that provide information for project discovery and data exchange.
3) Software to link disparate datasets via Internet technologies.
